I’ve lived in New England for nearly 2 years now and would rate it as one of the most challenging, varied but beautiful outdoor places I’ve ever been to. I’ve even written a guide here to the best trails in Connecticut. I’ve also spent time setting trail records on the New England Trail and Old Leatherman Loop and in snow and baking heat one thing remains constant…. the need to take care of your feet with the right socks. I’ve written a blog about footcare here.

Wildly Good Socks are the easiest $14 no-brainer for your feet ever.

Merino Wool

Merino is a breed of sheep known for its soft and finely crimped wool. The diameter of wool is measured in microns – the lower the micron the finer it is. Regular coarse wool can be over 40, but merino is much finer, from about 15 to 24 micron. Merino isn’t itchy or rough like thicker wools but still offers impressive warmth and moisture-wicking capabilities.

The merino wool Wildly Good use is soft and hard wearing and regulates your foot temperature well by being cool in the Summer and Warm in the Winter. The smart thing here is that they are a lightweight sock in the areas where your foot needs to regulate heat and moisture while having thicker cushioning only on the areas of contact like heel and toe that it is needed.

There is a small amount of synthetic material worked into these socks to help maintain fit better and support the fabric more when washing so you don’t have to treat them any differently to other gear when washing.

Fit

The socks go up high like most traditional hiking socks, which is something I like on trails when I’m running and hiking. Even in the summer when wearing shorts you often still want protection from ticks in the undergrowth most of the time.

Features

Wools biggest advantage when in the outdoors is that its warm even when its completely wet. We know that your feet will get wet from time to time when outdoors and wool gives you the confidence to know your feet wont get cold. Wool also resists ‘that stinky foot smell’ way more than synthetic socks. These are the two biggest reasons that wool plays a large role in my clothing choices on multi day thru hikes and runs.

Value

Wildly Good sell direct and not via retail outlets which removes the middle man and means these $14 socks punch well above their price range and are comparable to socks twice the price we see in stores. They are also a USA company so you get to support a local business.

Gripes

I literally don’t have any. They are a plucky new startup and I’m sure we will see an extended range soon. I would like to see a shorter length ankle sock for the summer in their range.

Closest Competitor

Darn Tough Socks in nearby Vermont are probably the closest competitor (in a friendly New England kind of way) but their socks are a hybrid merino/synthetic blend and come in at $6 more expensive.

Care and Washing

I would strongly recommend washing these socks on low temperatures and leaving them to dry by hanging them up rather than tumble drying.

Verdict

Whats not to like? These socks tick every box. Extremely good value for money from a cheerful local USA company using top quality materials and excellent construction. With a 1 year guarantee and 1% donation to environmental causes this is the easiest $14 no brainer for your feet ever.
