The Lillinonah Trail is a 5.6 mile loop trail in the Paugusset State Forest near Newtown with winding forest and shoreline views of the Housatonic River.
Full Guide
The Lillinonah Trail loop is roughly square shaped and the sections through the woods show considerable damage from a microburst storm in 2018 that has taken considerable time to make safe. There are views of the Housatonic River for a 3 mile section of the trail.
The trail is named after Princess Lillinonah who has a complicated a tragic mythical story of various versions, I’ve read a few online and I’m none the wiser, but it seemed to end in her and her lover going off Lovers Leap.
Trails nearby
The Sunny Valley Preserve Trail and Zoar Trail are both very near to this trail and this trail features in my Best Trails of Connecticut Guide. You can also see a lot of blue tubes used to harvest maple syrup between the maple trees near the Echo Valley Road car park that we used.
Parking
There are a number of car parks with access to this trail but we parked here.
