Full Review
I recently stood in my garage with a friend who was going out on a trail at high altitude and needed to travel light because he was self sufficient. It was mid summer and we debated the merits of a hammock over a lightweight tent and in the end opted for him to borrow a tent off me because he was worried that he might be above the treeline and not be able to suspend a hammock, and also because he was worried that the weather was unpredictable and it might rain. A month later while reviewing this Haven Hammock Tent for the first time I realized that the dilemma my friend had would have been solved by the Haven system because it allows you to use it as a tent OR a hammock AND because it had a rain fly and an insulating mattress. What a difference a month makes!
Packs up small
Firstly the pack itself comes in small. It would easily fit in a 25L or 35L backpack without taking up most of the room. When you think that you only need a sleeping bag/quilt with this system you get a complete sleep system that doesnt take up too much space and weight and with the option to decide whether to take the rain fly tarp or bug net depending on how much weight you want to save and where you are going.
Set up
Setting up the Haven Hammock Tent isn’t too difficult. Find an area with no dead branches on the ground ( a sign a dead tree may kill you in the night when branches drop) and simply run the super easy daisy chain straps round two sturdy trees at roughly chest to neck height. I love the daisy loop straps because you simply thread one end through the loop and let the tension hold the straps rather than trying to tie knots.
Strut Your Stuff
Once hanging like a traditional hammock you now open up two lightweight struts and located two black reinforced micro pockets inside the hammock to shape the Haven Hammock Tent into its box shape. The moment this happens you get an incredibly rigid box shape that honestly feels like its made of hard struts all round and not just fabric.
The clever tension throughout maintains the structure and provides a very solid base that’s impossible to fall out of. If you aren’t a fan of hammocks and worry about rolling around you’ll love the stability this gives you.
Anything Bugging You?
You then have the option to zip on the bug net if you wish which cleverly has an entry option on both sides of the hammock.
No More ‘Cold Hammock Bum’
When you usually sleep in a hammock you need to have an under quilt hanging beneath the hammock to stop you getting a cold back and bum. By having a square inflatable mattress the Haven Hammock Tent not only provides insulation and comfort ( getting rid of the need for a second quilt or sleeping bag) but also adds more structural rigidity as it neatly slides and secures inside. As a bonus if you don’t have trees where you plan to camp you have a comfortable floor to sleep on and can secure the tent to the ground with various peg points ( the tent pegs are provided).
Gimme Shelter
If you want to stay warmer or avoid the rain there is an easy to attach rain tarp. What I like is that it comes with a cord for mounting in various angles and it has connectors so that you can secure it down against the hammock on both sides to help keep heat in and turn it in to a tent. The cord provided for the tarp light up light lasers at night in a lamp beam so there is no danger of tripping over them.
Comfort
I used the ultra light setup which gave me the lowest overall weight and I would say this is perfect for anyone up to a 44 inch chest. Beyond that I would suggest opting for the XL version. From a length point of view there is PLENTY of space for your pack and gear inside with you too if its raining.
Thoughtful Interior
The Haven Tent Hammock has the most thoughtful interior of any tent I’ve every used. It has 6 ( SIX!) separate mesh pockets to store phone, headlamp etc and the high mounted support struts make excellent places to hang wet gear or damp socks.
Modular Customizable Options
There are a number of options for your set up. You can choose between a standard and XL size as well as various color combinations from green, camouflaged etc and you also have 3 variations of mattress comfort (weight v comfort) and 2 tarp fly options ( extra coverage versus weight).
Gripes
This is very obviously a carefully thought out system by an individual that knows their stuff. I was to have a few very minor gripes I would have liked to have seen the bug net mesh under a bit less tension when set up as the tension is starting to pull the bug net away in places ( simply a little bit more material and slightly less tension would probably solve this).
Verdict
The Haven Hammock Tents combine a lightweight hammock that can also be used as a tent if you don’t have trees to suspend from. The Haven Hammock avoids the need for an extra under quilt by insulating you underneath with an inflatable square and flat mattress that fits snugly into the hammock. About Haven
The Haven Tent is here today because my wife McKenzie and I decided to make 2018 our Year of Creativity. We were on the back half of a world tour with our young 3 kids. As @FiveTakeFlight we visited 38 countries in 54 weeks… It was the busiest and best year of my life.
The last week of that crazy year brought us to our family ranch in Promise, Oregon where the idea for the Haven Tent was born.
I was laying in a camping hammock, trying to get comfortable, when I envisioned my head and feet lowering so my body was on a single plane. With this spark of an idea, the wheels started turning. Just before I shut the whole thing down due to a lack of time or expertise, I remembered that 2018 was our Year of Creativity. And thought, “This is my chance to make something.”
Our Mission
As an avid outdoorsman, it was hard to reconcile the fact that every amazing day spent in the woods, would be punctuated by a miserable night. I designed the Haven Tent with the goal of, making sleep the highlight of camping.
6lbs id a light weight hammock? Give an example of a heavy backpacking hammock.
The Lawson Hammock
Sounds perfect for motorcycle camping on the East Coast.
Bug net zipper separates on wrong end. Needs more material-looser fit- or better zippers. Bug net pimple fastener does not stay fastened. Inflatable mattress needs more pressure to keep from folding on the centerline.
