The Outdoor Vitals Hammock is a super lightweight hammock that packs down small, weighs only 13oz and comes with a very easy to set up and strong hanging system from a company that’s known for its high quality non nonsense outdoor gear.
Advantages of a Hammock
The advantages of a hammock over a tent in the USA are noticeable. Firstly on rocky or uneven terrain you no longer need to find an area of flat clear ground, and you can even set up on a slope or over a stream! By using a hammock you avoid having your gear laying down on a damp cold ground too. Using trees to support the hammock also means you are likely to gain extra shade and shelter from the trees and it gets rid of the need to bring an inflatable sleeping mattress.

From a temperature and comfort point of view I think a hammock really excels in the summer. By being off the ground more of you body gets a cooling airflow/breeze around it at night keeping you cooler and the available Bug Net for the Hammock means you can still keeps bugs out without feeling claustrophobic because the tarp ridge line keeps the shape of the mesh away from your face.
In the winter I would suggest being more cautious because your body is going to need more insulation beneath you as there is no ground to provide shelter from the wind. In this case you can attach an insulation Quilt Beneath and add a Tarp above to keep the rain or snow off.
Full Review
Outdoor Vitals have very few items on their site. This is because everything they make is the best they can do. I’ve always been impressed with their build quality and price and in the past have reviewed their Satu Pants, Tarp, Dragonwool Clothing and Stormloft Quilt and been impressed with all of them.
Fabric
The hammock is made from a high quality lightweight ripstop nylon. You can see triple reinforced stitching in key areas and the fabric is strong enough that it isn’t necessary for the hammock to need a ridge line for strength.
Stuff Sack
What I like about the stuff sack is that its actually stitched and attached to the hammock. I’m sure if you’ve ever been camping one of the things you look for in the morning s trying to locate the stiff sacks for the tents and sleeping bags, and they usually get really well hidden. By having it attached to the hammock you cant lose it and better still you can also use it as a gear holder while you are sleeping.
Straps
The Hammock comes with two sturdy wide straps with daisy loops in them to wrap round a tree. I recommend looking for trees about 12 to 15ft apart and to set the straps up at around eye level.
Carabiners and Whoopie Sling
I had not heard of a whoopie sling before now. The hammock comes with two lightweight carabiners to attach the hammock to the tree straps. From there you use a whoopie sling to adjust the tension you need. Basically one length of high strength dyneema cord passes inside the other like a chinese finger trap. It means you can easily slide to the correct tension, but the moment you apply weight to the line it locks off solid and wont budge again until you intentionally want to adjust.
Gripes
I have zero gripes. This is another superb piece of kit from Outdoor Vitals at a superb price.
Closest Contender
The closest contender would probably be the Hammock Gear Hammock, but the Outdoor Vitals packs to half the size of the competition and comes in lighter too.
Verdict
The Outdoor Vitals Hammock is a super lightweight hammock that packs down small, weighs only 13oz and comes with a very easy to set up and strong hanging system from a company that’s known for its high quality no nonsense outdoor gear.
