Ombraz Refugio Sunglasses Review – No Arms, No Problem?

When it comes to adventure-ready eyewear, durability and comfort are usually the first things on my list. After countless broken sunglass arms on trails, rivers, and ski slopes, I decided to put the Ombraz Refugio sunglasses through their paces. These are no ordinary sunnies—they ditch the arms entirely in favor of a recycled nylon cord system that cinches behind your head. It’s a bold design, but does it actually work for people who spend their lives outdoors?

First Impressions

Pulling them out of the box, the Refugios immediately feel different—lightweight, sturdy, and just that bit quirky with no hinges or arms to snap. The fit system is a simple, adjustable cord that tightens at the back. It looks minimalist, but surprisingly, it feels secure right away.

The case comes with a built in lense wipe as well which means I never lose the ability to wipe clean my sunglasses again.

The frame shape sits somewhere between classic wayfarer and sporty wraparound. Big enough to shield from side glare on water or snow, but still stylish enough for a post-adventure beer. The 80s are very much back at the moment ( moustaches too !) so these modern retro vibes will be loved by many right now.

Performance in the Field

I tested the Refugios in three main environments:

  • On the slopes: No slippage under a ski helmet. The cord actually makes them feel more stable than traditional sunglasses when skiing aggressively.
  • On the water: Paddleboarding and kayaking can be brutal on sunglasses, but the Refugios float with a retainer (sold separately), and I didn’t once worry about losing them.
  • On the bike: Cycling usually means either full-wrap glasses or constant slipping. These stayed put, even on bumpy gravel rides.
  • Out running – I loved these on the trails as they kept the bugs out of my eyes and didnt steam up.

The polarized Zeiss lenses do an excellent job of cutting glare. Visibility was sharp and crisp in high-reflective environments—icy slopes, rivers, and sunny asphalt.

What Other Reviewers Are Saying

I like to cross-check my gear tests with what other adventurers are saying. Online, Ombraz consistently gets praise for their durability and comfort. Many reviewers point out that they can be worn for hours without pressure points (something traditional arms often cause). Skiers and climbers especially highlight the security of the cord system, while travelers love that you can stash them flat in a pocket without worrying about snapping the hinges.

The main complaints I’ve seen? Some users miss the convenience of slipping sunglasses on and off one-handed, and the cord takes a bit of getting used to. A few also mention the price point being steeper than your average pair of sunnies, though most feel the performance and durability justify it.

Pros & Cons of the Ombraz Refugio

Cons

  • Takes a bit of time to adjust to the cord system
