Super Speedy Review
As Hooded Puffers go the Outerknown Puffer Hoodie does what all good hooded puffers do. Keeps you warm and packs away small when you don’t need it. As far as gimmicks and gizmos and things that make you go ‘oooooooooh’ this jacket has none of those. Instead you get a well thought out, well made, generously tailored DWR coated jacket that gives you two colors for the price of one by being genuinely reversible. What you also get is clothing brand that has a sustainable planet friendly ethos, which isn’t a surprise given its roots with the professional surfer Kelly Slater.
What you get is a jacket that basically pulls rubbish from the sea, recycles water bottles and uses ethically sourced duck down. What you get is a puffer that Greta Thunberg would use.
PURCHASE $248In Depth Review
It would be hard to imagine what you could achieve with some recycled water bottles and some duck down but the brand Outerknown have found their niche with a good balance between a well made quality jacket and a positive impact on the environment.
Weaving Bottles
The outer (and inner – more on that later) material is a ripstop nylon fabric that is strong enough to resist tears and scrapes but soft enough to act as a lining as well. The jacket is well stitched, fits well (doesn’t make you look too bulky) and has enough baffle segments to stop the filling moving round too much and create cold patches.
Wont Get You Down
The jacket is filled with ethically sourced 700 fill down giving this jacket a huge amount of warmth whilst taking up very little space in a pack when not being used. I’m more of a fan of down when the jacket is generally used when standing around ( like as a belay jacket or when resting on the peak of mountain during a hike or run). I would recommend storing this jacket hung up ( not scrunched in a bag) and wash gently on low temperatures and tumble dry on low to fluff up the down.
Blues and Twos
Its blue AND black. This jacket is genuinely reversible right down to the zips so you get double the bang for your buck by being able to choose what color jacket to wear. What is impressive is the fabric is just as comfortable as a lining as it is on the outside.
Pocketyness
The Puffer Hoodie has loads of pockets partially as a result of being reversible. There are also draw string cords round the hood and hem to keep the wind out if its extra cold.
Water off a Ducks Back
The ripstop fabric of the jacket is DWR coated meaning it will actively repel rain for a long period of time by making it bead on the surface and run off. This jacket will survive lots of downpours, but isnt a replacement for a decent waterproof jacket if you are going to be out in the rain for more than an hour.
Off the Cuff
The Puffer Hoodie has elastic cuffs to keep the wind out too. The jacket also packs up inside its own inner pocket making storing it in your pack easier when not in use.
Gripes
This is the bit where I normally have a bit of a moan. For rock climbers you might find the hood a bit tight with a helmet on, but for the rest of us the hood size is fine. Other than that I’m not sure I would change anything on this jacket.

About Outerknown
11 time World Surf League Champion, Kelly Slater and acclaimed designer, John Moore founded Outerknown with the belief that we have a responsibility to make clothing that respects the world around us.
For over two decades, Kelly and John were on the frontlines of fashion, seeing firsthand the massive impact the industry had on the environment. There came a point where they realized the clothes they were designing and wearing were part of the problem. They wanted to be part of the solution.
What if we could design the kinds of clothes we love to wear in a more conscious way? That’s the question they’re answering every day. They founded Outerknown to change the game and create clothing that not only reflects our style but also our values.
Kelly Slater created Outerknown to smash the formula. To lift the lid on the traditional supply chain and prove you can actually produce great looking menswear in a sustainable way.
