In Depth Review
I’ve been impressed with literally everything I’ve tried from Outdoor Vitals. The small kickstarter size of the company has that sweet spot for making the perfect ‘thing’ for every item they set their sights on. Their Ultra Lightweight Tarp became my go to camping item last summer when thru hiking, and their Stormloft Quilt was used on my 343 mile Leatherman Loop Fastest Known Time and 210 Mile New England Trail Fastest Known Time.
Outdoor Vitals have now launched a new Kickstarter Campaign to get these Satu Pants and their Dragonwool clothing launched and I was lucky enough to get an early look at these and test a prototype for about 4 weeks prior to launch.
Fabric
The Toray Japanese stretch fabric of the Satu Pant is a synthetic lightweight breathable material that washes easily, repels light rain drizzle well and has a lot of stretch in it making it extremely comfortable to wear no matter how active you are. It also dries quickly when washed and is very resistant to odors and creasing.
Fit
The Satu Adventure Pants have a more ‘European’ fit to them than most USA pants I’ve tried, and I actually prefer this fit for being active outdoors. They are quite slim on the leg so you don’t have excess fabric flapping about and comfort isn’t compromised because of the extreme stretch of the fabric. I’m also ‘below average’ height for my size so I was super pleased to see that the length of the pants wasn’t too long. They have a zip fly and button waist.
Pockets
There are 2 flat pockets on the seat of the Satu pants with an overhanging flap to keep things secure. The sides have 2 pockets for your hands or keys/phone etc as you would expect with any pant. There is also another square cargo pocket on the right thigh with a secure zip set at a dynamic angle. This pocket is perfect to keep things like your phone super secure if you were boldering or scrambling about outdoors.
Zips
There are two very neatly tailored zips down the thigh of the trousers. These can be zipped down and have a light mesh behind them to allow you to vent heat to quickly if you get too hot in these trousers.
Waistbelt
The waist area has belt loops for a waist belt and also has a small cord buckle that you can tighten at the front to make the waist slightly more snug and secure if you aren’t wearing a belt.
Gripes
I had a minor gripe about the location of the ankle toggle on the prototypes I tested but this has now been changed on the finished product to a more convenient area of the pants.
Closest Contender
I’ve reviewed a lot of pants in the last year but none of them really compare. The Vollebak 100 Year Pants are indestructible but a thicker material only really suited for the Winter, The Topo Dual Pants or Cargo Pants are heavy duty but don’t quite have the stretch comfort and lightness/ breathability that the Outdoor Vitals Satu Pants have. I have literally not tested any pants that are quite as versatile and comfortable as the Satu.
Verdict
In testing I ended up using these pants a lot. I wore them at High School when substitute teaching students Phys Ed classes, at the weekends as a ‘slouch around the house’ kind of thing and even wore them for a 5 mile trail run just to see if they were comfortable enough for even that (they were). The lightweight fabric makes them ideal for anytime from Spring through to Fall and for the winter these would pair up well with the Dragonwool Thermal from Outdoor Vitals.
These are obviously great as an outdoor pant on hiking trails but the level of features and fabric and comfort means they are elevated in my mind to something rather more. If I was through hiking the Appalachian Trail…. These would be the one pair of pants I’d take.
You can find out more from the Kickstarter Campaign here and help support this super company being another great product to market.

Hi, nice review. I will seriously think about getting these. One question about the fit, however. When hiking I do like to use the pockets to put things in! Are the pants too tight to make the pockets useful? If you can see the outline of everything in the pants it’s too tight to move comfortably with that extra battery, map, lens caps, etc in there.
There is plenty of stretch in the fabric and when I’ve had quite a lot of stuff in the pockets it hasn’t hindered me in any way. Hope that helps !
