I had lived in New England ( having moved from Old England) for nearly two years before I finally got clothing levels right when I went outdoors. New England weather can be so changeable and extreme that I felt no matter what I did I never quite wore the right number of layers or types of clothing.

I review A LOT of gear on this site but I’ve never reviewed gloves before because….well… gloves are gloves right ? As we get in to the depths of winter here in New England I’ve finally found a pair of gloves that are worth talking about and its the versatility of them that makes them worth a review.
Slight of Hand
These gloves are basically convertible. We all understand the importance of layering when we are outdoors, base layer…mid layer fleece ….jacket…. you get the idea. With gloves I tend to opt for a thin pair when it gets below freezing and a much thicker bulkier pair when its brutally cold.
What the Nathan Convertible Mitt does is give you a thinner lycra comfortable glove for temperatures near freezing with the option to ‘double layer’ when it gets colder and convert it into a full 2 layer mitt.
My first thoughts before getting them out of the packet was that the mitt bits would flop about in the way when not being used, but a nifty stretchy little sleeve on the top of the hand section allows the mitt bits to be stored away when not in use.
If youve ever been outside for exercise on a very cold day you will know that you tend to start with cold hands that warm up as you get running. With this modular approach you can start a cold run with the mittens and then roll the mittens back once you warm up a bit.
Touchy Feely
We all live in a smartphone world so its great that the fingertips on the gloves are touchscreen friendly. The thumb also comes with a ‘nose wipe’ which we secretly all know is useful.
Grippy no Slippy
I normally only talk about grip with shoes . These gloves have a thin layer of strategicaly placed silicone that makes the palms of the hands very grippy. This is useful if you are holding trekking poles or need to grab things like bike handlebars.
Reflective
The strips of reflective areas on the top of the hands light up when hit b ythings like car headlights giving you an added safety bonus on cold dark winter days.
Fit
Sizing wise the material has a lot of stretch so I think if you think you are between sizes I would recommend actually sizing down. I’m a size medium in almost all clothing but I chose a size small in these gloves ( I’m a size 9 USA foot) and they fitted great.
Quality
The stretch material is breathable and washes easily. the stitiching is high quality with flat locked stretchy stitching which means its unlikely to have failure points. If you want to extend the life of these gloves I recommend washing on low temps and not tumble drying .
Gripes
Usually i have a bit of a moan about some features of things I review. Honestly I cant really fault these gloves for the design and the price. I have been wearing these gloves long after testing and they are now my default pair this winter so I think that says it all really.
