Some of us are happy to be average, but some of us long for more excitement in life. We want to chase waterfalls, hike volcanoes, and dramatically stare into the horizon from the edge of a cliff like we’re in a movie trailer, right? We don’t want to settle for the simple life, and that is just as much the case when we are on vacation as it is when we are living our daily lives to the max.
The thing is, sometimes life hands you a city break instead of an all-action adventure trip, and you need to be able to make the most of it so that you can still have an amazing time and not feel like a city trip was a trip wasted, right?
Well, don’t worry because, you know what? There are tons of ways to make a city break a big adventure, as you will see below…
1. Treat the City Like a Playground, Not a Schedule
Forget the “10 museums in two days” itinerary. Cities are full of secrets – hidden alleys, local street art, food stalls you’d never find on a map. Ditch the guidebook and explore like a local. Get lost on purpose (but like, safely) and let your curiosity lead. Bonus points if you find a parkour group or a rooftop garden. City = jungle gym.
2. Stay Somewhere That Doesn’t Feel Like a Shoebox
The right basecamp makes all the difference. If you’re in a city like Manila, for example, skip the standard hotel room and opt for one of the serviced residences in Makati. You’ll get space to stretch, maybe a kitchenette to whip up your weird hiking snacks, and most importantly, a launchpad for urban adventure. Because nothing kills your explorer buzz like fluorescent lighting and no coffee.
3. Look Up (No, Really)
Cities have layers. If you’re just shuffling from one street-level attraction to the next, you’re missing half the magic. Climb towers. Find observation decks. Seek out rooftop cafes or bars with a view. Cities at night from above? Underrated bliss. Extra credit for spotting neon signs in languages you don’t understand.
4. Chase Adrenaline in Urban Form
No mountains? No problem. Many cities offer their own brand of thrill: rock climbing gyms in repurposed warehouses, zip lines across parks, or bike tours that feel like an extreme sport in traffic. Ever tried urban kayaking? Parkour class? Scavenger hunts by app? Embrace your inner daredevil, just swap the jungle for the concrete one.
5. Eat Like a Wild Thing
Food is an adventure, especially in a city. Skip the chains and hunt down local gems, night markets, and bizarre-but-delicious snacks. The weirder the name, the better. If someone tells you, “Only locals eat this,” congratulations, you’ve hit gold.
6. Find Nature in the Noise
Even the busiest cities have pockets of green. Botanical gardens, riverside walks, city zoos, or that one massive park with joggers, yogis, and rogue squirrels. Go there. Breathe. Recharge. Pretend you’re in a forest if you must. Your soul will thank you.
Remember, adventure isn’t a place – it’s a mindset!
