As a trail runner I’m not often running in just shorts unless its really hot in the Summer. That’s because in the winter my legs just get too cold on long runs and in the summer the trails offer too many hazards from thorns and ticks. I like wearing leggings to run but gripe endlessly about the lack of pockets in running gear. When BN3TH offered a solution to where to put my keys and phone, keep my legs warm AND hide my ‘man bulge’ from the unsuspecting public I was keen to take a look.

The Quickie Review

These 2 in 1 shorts are Breathable, comfortable ( only one waistband for the shorts AND leggings) and warm enough for the winter this combo keeps your legs warm in the winter while being thin enough to use as protection against ticks when trail running in the summer. For me the biggest win by a mile is the whopping four pockets the shorts have, including a zip pocket for keys AND and HUGE waterproof pocket for your phone. You’ll buy for the warm legs but love it for the pockets.

There is also a separate pair of shorts without the leggings included if you don’t want the built in leggings.

Proper Poke Around Review

So what do you call Leggings and Shorts combined ? Sheggings ? Lorts ? I had to ask how to pronounce BN3TH ( its Beneath) so I feel that the ‘Pro 2 in 1’ isn’t the best name, I’d call them the ‘backpack shorts’ because you can carry so much stuff in them.

They arrive in a little mesh bag. This is useful for washing them in to stop them being damaged by velcro etc in the wash. I recommend washing these on a cold wash and do not use fabric softener on them so they maintain their breathability. You can tumble dry on cool but I would recommend leaving them to just air dry.

The main design feature that BN3TH are keen to explain is that you get shorts and leggings in one garment with only one comfortable waistband. They are correct. You absolutely do. What surprises me is they don’t even mention the best feature of this garment. which is the pockets. The pockets are ace.

Materials

They are made from a lightweight mesh synthetic fibre on the legs that walks a very fine balance of just warm enough in the winter with cool enough to use as leg protection in the summer. The material wicks away moisture well and they come with a ‘Pucker Panel’ which sounds weird but basically means they avoid having any seams where they can cause ‘issues’. The seams are flat lock stitching so they don’t rub and there is also a ‘My Pakage Technology’ bit that will keep your ‘man bits’ from flailing around and injuring wildlife.

Be careful with the leg fabric when trail running. Some careless bashing through bushes could put holes in the fabric and I suspect the nature of this fabric would make Velcro its sworn enemy, so wash it in the meshy bag.

The Shorty Part of the Shorts ( If You Don’t Want the Leggings Bit)

The Premium 2 in 1 shorts feel like running shorts. They are basically a good wicking running short. There is a wide comfortable waistband on them which doesn’t fold over and dig in, and it has a subtle silicon band inside to help hold them steady.

You can get the 2 in 1 shorts without the leggings. They have an inner short to keep you comfortable and the outer short is identical to the 2 in 1 Full Length Shorts.

Gloriously Pockety

So when I go for a run from my house I need to take my keys with me and my mobile phone for music. Most running gear has no pockets. The Pro 2 in 1 full length and the shorts on their own have FOUR pockets. I nearly cried with joy. So much running gear gives no thought to people that run in the real world that this was the best feature of these leggings/sheggings/lorts.

Two normal pockets to put your hands in when you aren’t running to keep them warm , or when you feel self conscious and have no idea where to put your hands. Round the back on the right is a diagonal small zip for a small pocket that could fit your keys with enough space for a few gels or even gloves too.

The pockets have zips because I don’t want to lose my keys or Cell Phone. By having a separate pocket for keys and bigger one up the front for your phone you don’t have your keys scratch up your screen. This makes me happy.

The front left zip pocket is epic. It has a heavy duty rubberised waterproof zip for a full waterproof pocket. Perfect for your phone on a wet day. They have put a small sealable hole in too for headphone cables but its my feeling that most runners have bluetooth headphones these days so its not necessarily needed. The position of the pocket minimises the phone bouncing around. You can fit the largest of smartphones in there, and still have room for small gloves/ hat /buff as well.

Gripes

Only some minor grumbles from me. The legs feel a little bit too long for me and the rear pocket zip needs to really be a bit bigger so its easier to find. I’d also do away with the headphones hole on the front pocket and it feels slightly weird that the main Cell Phone pocket is on the left not the right ( 90% of us are right handed).

Verdict

You’ll buy these for the warmth on you legs and discretion of the shorts, but you’ll love them for the pockets. Wash them in the bag on cool and be careful with them on tough trails and they will give you plenty of value for money for the $85 bucks BN3TH are currently asking .
