In Depth Review
When I’m out trail running my gear gets a lot of abuse. I fall over, get rained on, sweat all over stuff and generally drop things from time to time. The Mighty Vibe fills a space within all that chaos. Coming in at well below the cost of a replacement screen on a smartphone this super small little black tile does all the heavy lifting for music when running and doing exercise, whilst being waterproof and shock resistant. This means you can keep your smartphone safely out of the way and not panic when it rains. When we are bombarded more and more with stressful things from out phone there is something to be said for having the option to take music or podcasts with us when we exercise but leave the phone in the locker.
Little Black Tile
The Mighty Vibe is super small. measuring only 1.5 inches square and about the thickness of a smartwatch. It has a very strong clip on the back so you can attach it just about anywhere on your clothing or simply keep it in your pocket. There is a water resistant headphone jack as well as being able to hook up directly with headphones via bluetooth. As well as black you can get the unit in 3 other colors too.
Battery and Memory
The Mighty Vibe comes with about a 5 hour charge on the battery. The box also contains a standard USB charging cable that the unit recharges off. I found that it took under an hour to fully charge it.
No Using Up Your Monthly Data Plan
The unit downloads the music and podcast files to its internal memory so you don’t need to have the phone nearby to listen to it. It also wont roar through your monthly data plan streaming music live. I love that it auto synchs and downloads your existing playlists from spotify or amazon music. I listen to a lot of podcasts on longer runs too so put them in their own separate playlist.
Synch via Bluetooth
The unit connects to you phone and headphones via bluetooth. I found it was quick and easy to synch once the app was downloaded. You can also plug headphones in via the waterproof jack on the unit.
Download the App
The unit supports android and I Phone for its app. Once downloaded you can synch your phone and spotify or amazon music account and then download music and podcasts straight onto the unit via your phones wifi connection.
Might Vibe Controls
The unit is turned on by simply pressing and holding the play button. There is also a button to advance the playlist and you can also toggle shuffle on and off too direct from the unit. The full instruction unit is here. When you are toggling through your playlists it speaks to you to let you know which playlist you are selecting.
Music Quality
I cant speak for my (or your) taste in music but I was surprised out how good the quality of the audio was from the Might vibe. Its also very unobtrusive because it only weighs 0.7 oz. Rather than it being a music player in its own right its almost like its a small headphone bolt on.
Verdict
There are plenty of people that wont ‘get it’ with this unit. We all have smartphones with the ability to play music so the idea of a separate music player without a screen seems very ‘2003’.
For people that worry about breaking or getting their mobile phone wet while running, or those that simply want to able to block out the attentions of a mobile phone the Mighty Vibe will be something of a blessing. With 5 hours of playback and survivability from a throw across an entire car park (yup…I’m brutal in testing) this unit comes in at way less than the cost of a broken mobile phone screen and may become something I use by the pool a lot as well in the Summer.
