If you ask my wife she will tell you that I snore loudly when I sleep on my back. She will kick and poke me to roll on my side so I sleep better but this means If I’m sleeping outdoors I start to get tangled up in my sleeping bag. This can mean later on in the night you feel restricted and the zip seems to have formed a weird diagonal round and under you making it hard to get in and out. With the ZENBIVY system there is a solution to this giving you the advantages of sleeping with a quilt AND the advantages of a sleeping bag and coming the closest I’ve ever come to sleeping in a real bed when out in the woods.

Set Up

I rarely read instructions. My test was to see if I could assemble everything without instructions as I find its a sign of a well designed system that isn’t overly complicated. You start with the inflatable mattress which has an easy to inflate valve. From there you then place the sheet round the mattress using the 4 corners to hold it. A strap runs underneath to keep everything in place. The sheet comes with a built in hood and shoulder area and provides clips to attach to the quilt.

I only made one mistake which was to put the sheet the wrong way up. You’ll know if you’ve got this right because the quilt has clips on one side and loops on the other so you are aiming for clips to loops on both sides when attaching the quilt to the sheet. If you get loop to loop or clip to clip you’ve done it the wrong way round.

Once assembled there is a lined pillow to snuggle into the hood area and you can then attach the quilt to as many clip down points you wish all the way down the mattress. On a cold night ( like when I tested it) you will want to clip most up but on a warmer evening you can simply lay with the quilt over you completely free.

Fabric and Filling

The exterior of the quilt and sheet are made from a very soft but strong ripstop fabric. Its also quite wicking so it stops you feeling clammy at night when sleeping. The quilt is filled with a a hydrophobic ( water repelling) 800 duck down that makes for a a very very light quilt with superb thermal insulation. I slept basically outside with hardly any shelter with a light wind and freezing temperatures and I did not get cold at all when I tested this system.

Weight

The ZENBIVY Light Bed 10° is aimed more at the Thru Hiker or Fastest Known Time adventure so the fact that this whole system comes in at under 4lbs is impressive. You could shave a bit more weight by leaving some of the stuff bags behind too.

Freedom of Movement

I’m naturally a ‘side sleeper’ so I often have to adapt to sleeping on my back when I’m out on trail ( unless I’m VERY tired). When you are sleeping in colder temperatures you tend to need to zip a sleeping bag up tight and as you turn from one side to the other I find I can get tangled up with the zip all over the place and start to feel restricted. The ZENBIVY Light Bed 10° set up means you have much more room to twist and turn and because the mattress and quilt are secure to each other you don’t get any change in shape and orientation as you naturally swap sides through the night.

Stuff Sack and Drybags

The ZENBIVY Light Bed 10° system also has the option to come as a package which includes a stuffsack for the quilt and a drybag that doubles up as a pillow. This minimizes the size taken up in your pack. I also liked that everything had its own storage pouch so you can stay organized in camp.
