First Impressions – A True Challenger to Ultimate Direction

If you’ve followed me for any length of time, you’ll know I’ve been a die-hard Ultimate Direction fastpack user for nearly a decade. From the Fastpack 25 to the Fastpack 35, their vest-style packs have been my go-to for big mountain days and ultralight multi-day missions.

But here’s the bombshell: Gossamer Gear’s Fast Kumo has converted me. This pack outperforms UD offerings on so many fronts it’s hard to ignore.

Weight and Storage Comparison

Here’s how the Fast Kumo stacks up against my previous fastpacks:

PackWeightCapacityPockets
Gossamer Gear Fast Kumo20.3 oz (575g)36LSO MANY – waist, bottle, snacks, phone, mesh sides
Ultimate Direction Fastpack 2522 oz (623g)25LFewer pockets overall
Ultimate Direction Fastpack 3526 oz (737g)35LFewer pockets, slightly heavier
Outdoor Vitals Shadowlight27 oz (765g)60LMinimal fastpack-style pockets
Ortlieb Soulo~39 oz (1100g)25LWaterproof but heavy
Ortlieb Atrack~47 oz (1330g)25LFully waterproof but lacks front/waist pockets

At 20.3 oz with 36L capacity, the Fast Kumo is lighter than both UD packs while providing more storage space and dramatically more pockets.

Ergonomics and Comfort

What really sold me was how well the Fast Kumo carries weight. It fits like a vest but with the structure of a traditional frameless ultralight pack. Even with 8-10kg, it stays snug with no bounce, perfect for fast hiking and technical trail descents.

Waterproofness – A Major Win

Unlike UD packs, the Fast Kumo’s roll-top opening and waterproof fabric keep rain out far better. While not a full drybag like the Ortlieb Atrack, it offers superior weather resistance compared to any running vest-style pack I’ve used.

The Pockets – SO Many Pockets

This is where the Fast Kumo blows Ultimate Direction out of the water. The pack features:

  • Dual waist belt pockets
  • Dual large mesh side pockets for bottles or tent poles
  • Large stretchy front mesh pocket
  • Top quick access pocket
  • Shoulder strap pockets for phone, GPS, snacks

In total, it provides more organisation options than any fastpack I’ve ever reviewed.

Final Thoughts – Is It Worth It?

YES. The Fast Kumo is the first fastpack in nearly a decade to dethrone Ultimate Direction for me. It combines ultralight design with thoughtful ergonomics, weather resistance, and best-in-class storage options.

If you’re an ultralight hiker, trail runner, or multi-day fastpacker looking for a pack that carries comfortably while letting you access everything on the move, this is it.
