Super Speedy Review

This inflatable sleeping mat from Sea to Summit has some great features. It has an easy to use one way valve system so inflating it doesn’t mean you have to keep your mouth round the valve when blowing it up. Better still the stuff sack doubles as a bellows style hand pump to pump it up. It has 2 inches of insulation to keep you warm and comfortable and is made of a durable fabric that is reasonably resistant to puncture. Its a nice touch that the pack includes a free repair kit too just in case. It weighs less than 17oz for the size regular.

A well thought out and high quality mat that would keep even the most fickle ‘non-outdoorsy’ person happy when sleeping outdoors.

Full In Depth Review

I used to think that inflatable camping mats were about comfort, and whilst that is the case I actually find that the main way that inflatable mattresses make a big difference when camping is that they provide a large amount of insulation from a cold floor. Staying warm AND comfortable is crucial to a good nights sleep camping when you are already waking up every 15 mins convinced a Bear is about to eat you*

Construction and Weight

The size regular weighs in at just under 17 oz and packed up into a stuff sack it packs up surprisingly small. In fact it comes in much smaller than the previous Therm-a-Rest I’ve been using for years that is half the inflated thickness and half the overall size.

Based on me using it I would say this is good to use from Spring through to Fall so I’d rate this as an optimistic 3 Season mat.

Easy Puff

This mattress only takes about ten breaths to inflate. It takes less than a minute which is a real bonus because I’m usually tired when I’m getting ready to camp.

The biggest surprise was the built in bellows in the stuff sack. You can attach this bellows to the mattress valve and then ‘scoop’ up lots of air and then simply ‘roll’ the bellows down to inflate.

Comfort

The first thing I noticed was how quiet it was. Sounds weird to say doesn’t it? I’m used to inflatable camping mats being quite ‘squeaky’ and somehow this mattress is super quiet which makes a difference as I tend to turn over a lot in the night.

My second big test is how well this held up to nights sleep without deflating. Again I was surprised at how well the valve held the air in, because I sometimes need to ‘top up’ other mats half way through the night.

The material is insulated with ‘some kind of science reflective material’ which you or I aren’t really interested in the name of, and its also stuffed with an insulation material too. With the individual air sprung pockets it really looks and feels like a normal mattress. I found this did a good job of keeping me comfortable and warm when sleeping outdoors which is the point right ?

Spares and Repairs

When opening the stuff sack a repair kit also fell out. I think its a great touch to include some speedy repair patches and a spare rubber valve just in case. This is something I’ve not seen before from a camping air mattress company. The material put up with a lot of abuse for a week while I used it and didn’t get punctured.

It’s also great to see that they do a different shaped mattress depending on whether you are a man or woman, and have a number of size options to cover the smallest and tallest of us.

Gripes

I can usually find something to moan about. I’m hard pressed to think of any major complaints here though. I would maybe like to see an ultra small short minimalist version to save every last oz but that’s just me. Most people just want a decent nights sleep.

This is a well thought out and very high quality piece of camping gear that’s rugged and effective. Its competitively priced too against its main rivals.

About Sea to Summit

The origins of the company began in 1983 in Perth, Western Australia – a time when lightweight, outdoor products were hard to find in Australia. Roland Tyson, a keen climber and adventurer, began making his own gear on an antique sewing machine in his bedroom.

A few years later, in 1990, Australian mountaineer, Tim Macartney-Snape, approached Roland to make gear for his upcoming expedition – an audacious attempt to climb Mt Everest by beginning his ascent sea level. The gear that Roland would be making would need to work at every altitude over several months and be light and durable enough for the 5 month trek Tim would be embarking on.

The expedition was a success and so was the gear and the Sea to Summit brand was born. The name of the expedition was a perfect analogy for how Roland had been designing and producing equipment for years. Always starting from the ground up, questioning how things had been done before and how he could create gear that’s truly breaking new ground.

Decades later, this is still what makes them who they are: a company driven by design perfectionism that allows them to develop ingenious, functionally beautiful products with a “no worries” Australian attitude. Their original ethos ‘to equip and inspire’ continues to drive research and development of new techniques, materials, technologies and production methods. It inspires new product innovations that keep them at the forefront of delivering lighter, better made, better performing gear for all kinds of outdoor adventures – from high altitude expeditions to family car camping and everything in between.
