In Depth Review
Socks made entirely of synthetic materials have a number of advantages over wool socks, these include faster drying times and usually better moisture wicking qualities, but it usually comes at a price and that’s ‘that sock smell’. Whilst wool socks have natural odor fighting anti bacterial qualities many synthetic socks can smell bad quickly, especially on long runs so these socks from Hilly have all the advantages of a synthetic sock but with added polgiene to help fight odor build up.
Fabric
The fabric used is called nano glide and is a synthetic fabric designed to give low abrasion and reduce the chances of getting a blister. They also contain polygiene which helps fight odor buildup on long runs or hot days.
Fit
The sock fits snugly on your foot and gives a small amount of compression in key ares. The upper side of the sock has thinner venting weave to help dissipate heat and wick moisture away from your foot and through the lace section of your shoes.
Cushioning
The Hilly Marathon Fresh Socks have extra cushioning at the toe and heel area to help comfort when you are spending a lot of time on your feet in one go.
Seamless Toes
The toe area is made from a seamless construction to reduce the chances of a blister hot spot from abrasion.
Closest Contender
The closest sock that’s 100% synthetic that’s as good is the Topo Designs Sports Sock that I review here.
Verdict
The Hilly Marathon Fresh Socks are a medium thickness sock with polygiene to help combat odors. They have extra cushioning in the heel and toe area, upper foot venting to wick away sweat and heat and a seamless toe construction to help prevent blisters.

About Hilly
The Company was formed in 1992, by Dr. Ron Hill, MBE*, the former European and Commonwealth marathon champion. At the time he saw an opportunity to develop a range of technical performance running socks.
With a PhD, in Textile Chemistry, he was able to combine his technical expertise and running background to produce a core range to cater for the needs of the runner.
The range was split into two categories namely: Mono Skin and Twin Skin. The Mono Skin (single layer) range included the Marathon Fresh, Off Road and Super Racer Plus (now renamed Lite) and the Twin Skin (double layer), Moisture Management. All four socks have been improved over recent years.
Ron, accompanied by his sons, Steven and Graham and Stockport Harrier, Dean Loxam, developed the business and the range was sold to the specialist running stores by a team of external sales agents (many of whom remain with the company today).
Major developments have included the launch of a complete range of socks, in particular the Mono Skin Supreme – ‘Probably the most technical sock in the world’ and the new Twin Skin range – ‘Probably the best double-layer socks in the world’ In addition, the company now offers a comprehensive range of accessories, including: reflectives, hats, gloves, water carriers, neoprene products and lots, lots, more!
The company has continued to grow and is now one of the UK’s leading brands of technical running socks and accessories.
Hello, I purchased Hilly running socks, mono skin, and after one use and wash they shrunk so much that I can barely get them on. I bought the socks at the run-show held at the Birmingham NEC a couple of weeks ago. Would it be possible in any way to reshape / size them please. The wash temperature was 30degC and they dried in the airing cupboard.
Kind regards
sound slike a hot wash problem to me. you may have accidentally washed them hot. Also your name is amazing !
