In Depth Review
The ‘Quilt v Sleeping Bag’ debate may finally be over. This is the first time I’ve seen a sleeping bag that’s configured to be used traditionally on a sleeping mat but ALSO provide a complete warmth system when sleeping in a hammock. For hikers and adventurers that keep their evening camping options flexible ( I am one of these people) I love that fact that I now have the option to keep my kit light and be able to easily sleep on the ground OR in a hammock depending on where I’m camping.

Duck Down Fill
The Crestone is a 4 season sleeping bag that’s filled with 650 weight duck down. In the past down filling had a tendency to take a long time to dry and lose its thermal qualities when wet but more modern down jackets and sleeping bags use down that’s coated with a DWR coating to repel moisture away and maintain the warmth rating and make the fabric quicker to dry and less likely to get wet in the first place.
The underside is actually made of a synthetic material called clusterloft making it more effective when sleeping on a mat ( stopping the compression of down that makes it less effective when sleeping on a mat).
External Fabric
The external fabric is a rip stop nylon and the bag comes with quality YKK zips.
Fit
I found the Crestone is wider than a normal sleeping bag. If you turn a lot at night ( like I do) or sleep on your side you’ll find the extra room particularly useful. The same goes if you have broad shoulders or a big chest too.
Size and Weight
The sleeping bag weighs around 3lbs and compacts down to roughly 11 inches by 8 inches in your pack.
Best of Both Worlds
The width of the Crestone bag means you can use it like a normal sleeping bag on the ground with a sleeping pad but you can also ‘wrap’ it round a hammock and use it as both the under quilt and over quilt if sleeping in a hammock. You may not use both configurations on one camping trip but you are likely to have this is a your ‘go to’ sleeping bag if you go on different adventures in different places and want the flexibility to pick and choose your configuration each time. This is the single biggest reason why this sleeping bag represents such good value for money because you get twice the bang for you buck.
Closest Contender
Its hard to really compare this with any other sleeping bag, but for performance and value the closest contender is the Outdoor Vitals StormLoft which I reviewed.
